Press Release: 4th National Cyber Law Conference on “Data Privacy and Protection in India and Beyond – Challenges and Innovation” by Symbiosis Law School Hyderabad

The 4th National Cyber Law Conference (NCLC), on the theme “Data Privacy and Protection in India and Beyond – Challenges and Innovation”, in collaboration with the Cybersecurity Centre of Excellence – Data Security Council of India (CCoE-DSCI) was a two-day event conducted on 12th & 13th April, 2024 by the Centre for Specialisation in Cyber Law Studies at Symbiosis Law School, Hyderabad.

It is supported by Tatva Legal and Cyber Blog India, Knowledge Partner Asian School of Cyber Law, Techno-Legal Partner Manupatra, Media Partner Lawctopus and Food Partner Subway. We were thrilled to have received more than 130 abstracts authored by students, Professors and Legal Professionals from all over India for the 4th edition of the National Cyber Law Conference.

This not only heightened the competitiveness of the event but also fostered a rich exchange of knowledge and diversity among participants.

The National Cyber Law Conference was inaugurated by the Deputy Director, Dr. Anuradha Binnuri and the faculty-in-charge Ms. Munaganti Annapurna Devi, and graced by esteemed guests including Hon’ble Justice Shri Mandhata Seetharama Murthy, Former Judge of Andhra Pradesh High Court, Dr.Sriram Birudavolu, CEO of CCoE-DSCI, Mr. Raj Pagariya from The Cyber Blog India and Mr. Gokul Narayan from the Asian School of Cyber Laws.

On Day 1 of NCLC, participants were engaged in enlightening activities, including a Workshop and Quiz led by Mr. Raj Pagariya on the theme ‘Privacy Concerns in Online Activism’. The workshop delved into the multifaceted aspects of data privacy and offered valuable insights into the proactive measures individuals can adopt when engaging in online activism.

This was followed by an interactive quiz wherein the winners were awarded exciting cash prizes by the Cyber Blog India. In addition, the 4th NCLC featured an E-Sports Tournament titled ‘Brawlhalla’, providing participants with a platform to socialise, compete, and enjoy a fun-filled environment.

This event not only offered an opportunity for camaraderie but also the chance to vie for enticing cash prizes. Day 1 concluded with the performance of a Nukkad Natak titled “Gumraah” by the Drama Club of SLSH which shed light upon the ever-evolving dynamics of Data Privacy in India and also discussed the implications of the newly enacted Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Act, 2023.

Day 2 of the 4th NCLC started with a Panel Discussion on the theme “Data Privacy Standards and Harmonization Efforts”. The esteemed panel consisted of Mr. Gokul Narayan, Mr. Raj Pagariya and Ms. Ifrazunnisa Khan who is a Manager at Tatva Legal, Hyderabad.

The discussion was moderated by Dr. Ayush Goel and Ms. Munaganti Annapurna Devi from SLSH. The Panel Discussion delved into past and ongoing endeavours to align regulations across jurisdictions, with experts offering insights and engaging the audience in discussions.

The discussion shed light on the complexities of global data protection frameworks and emphasised the importance of collaborative efforts in ensuring privacy standards.

The Paper Presentations on various topics such as the DPDP Act, data privacy and cross-border data flows amongst others were conducted on Day 2 of the 4th NCLC. The Conference saw the participation of students, professors and legal professionals alike from across India, and each participant showcased impressive skill and knowledge, making the events highly competitive and educational.

The participating teams were divided into five distinct technical sessions, each featuring a panel of field experts tasked with adjudicating the papers. These technical sessions, serving as the event’s focal point, were highly successful, offering participants a platform to present their papers and raise awareness about the complexities of the expanding realms of data privacy and cyber law.

The Conference was then concluded with a Valedictory ceremony, wherein Hon’ble Justice Mrs. Surepalli Nanda, Sitting Judge of the High Court of Telangana addressed the audience and felicitated the various winners of the Paper presentations and sub-events of the Conference. Overall, the 4th National Cyber Law Conference was a giant success with the participants and students being enlightened with valuable insights.
