Justice Dinesh Mehta suspected forgery after noting that the 101 litigants were scattered in various parts of the country, but had seemingly gathered at one place to sign the same vakalatnama (document authorising a lawyer to represent a litigant before a court).
“How these 101 persons scattered in different parts of the State/Country have converged in the office of learned counsel for the petitioners and have signed on printout of one list and authorized petitioner No.1 to file and swear affidavit, is a question to be probed,” the Court’s March 19 order stated.
