Supreme Court initiates contempt of court case against PIL litigant who did not deposit ₹1 lakh costs

The Supreme Court was hearing a miscellaneous application (MA) filed in a public interest litigation (PIL) petition that was earlier dismissed.

While dismissing the PIL, the bench of Justices Ravikumar and MR Shah had, in December, said that India is a secular country and that such prayers cannot be made by way of PILs.

It had, therefore, imposed costs of ₹1 lakh on the petitioner for filing the “misconceived” plea.

The petitioner, in his MA, sought a relaxation of the said amount. However, the bench noted yesterday that the sum has not yet been deposited.

It, thus, proceeded to initiate contempt of court proceedings against the petitioner.
