Supreme Court seeks West Bengal Governor response to PIL alleging his inaction in assenting to Bills

Of late, there has been a substantial amount of litigation before the Supreme Court involving inaction on the part of Governors in states which are not ruled by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

In April 2023, the top court had taken note that Governors were delaying their assent to bills passed by state legislatures and had urged them to keep in mind the mandate under Article 200 of the Constitution which casts a duty on them to clear bills “as soon as possible”.

The State of Telangana had moved the apex court seeking directions to then Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan to give her assent to ten key bills passed by the State legislature.

Similar petitions by Punjab, Tamil Nadu and Kerala were also moved before the apex court.
