The Court was hearing a plea moved by the Association for Protection of Civil Rights against the invocation of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) against more than 100 people who took to social media to comment on the Tripura violence, which was triggered by the vandalisation of mosques and shops belonging to the Muslim community.
The Tripura Police had sent a notice under Section 91 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) to Twitter, regarding Khan’s tweets about the violence. In the notice, the police asked Twitter to remove his tweet and sought details of the IP address and phone number for the purpose of investigation in the criminal cases registered against him.
