New Delhi: Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has requested the Prime Minister to ensure that medical students who are back from Ukraine may continue their studies in India.
“Sir, this is an unprecedented war situation that calls for an extraordinary solution,” Banerjee wrote to Narendra Modi on Wednesday.
Bengal students who are eligible for internship will be accommodated in government medical colleges and will be paid a stipend “at par with the other candidates”, she wrote.
However, she has requested the Prime Minister to intervene in the stipulations set by the National Medical Commission — the governing body of medical education in India.
She has asked that other students in “different years of studies” be accommodated “at the equivalent level in private medical colleges… these medical colleges may be allowed to increase the equivalent number of seats”.
Banerjee said the NMC mandates that students qualify NEET to get admission to medical colleges in India. “Many of the students who have returned from Ukraine do not meet this requirement. It is requested that the relevant guidelines may be relaxed as a very special case to accommodate these students,” she wrote.
She said private medical colleges in West Bengal have agreed to accommodate these students at state quota fees. Her government will also financially help these students to pay course fees.
She requested the Prime Minister to take care of students in other states who are in a similar position. “I also request you… that steps taken by the NMC be implemented for other states as well,” Banerjee wrote to Modi.
Banerjee met some of the students on Wednesday. According to her, some 391 have returned to Bengal from Ukraine.
