The G20 is a grouping of the world’s largest economies, and its decisions have a significant impact on the global economic and political landscape. India’s presidency of the G20 will provide a platform for it to champion the interests of developing countries and promote global economic and social justice.It is noteworthy that four countries from the global South are leading the G20 through their consecutive presidencies, which is indeed unprecedented. The G20 is a forum for the world’s leading economies, and it is significant that countries from the global South are leading this forum.
The presidencies of Indonesia, India, Brazil, and South Africa provide an opportunity for these countries to shape the global economic agenda and represent the interests of developing countries. India’s presidency, which began on December 1, 2022, is focusing on three key themes: people, planet, and prosperity. It aims to strengthen global cooperation on climate action, promote inclusive economic growth, and advance digitalization.
Brazil will take over the presidency from India on November 30, 2023. Brazil’s priorities for its presidency are yet to be announced. However, it is expected that Brazil will continue to focus on issues related to sustainable development and inclusive growth. Overall, the consecutive presidencies of these four countries from the global South in the G20 represent a significant development in global governance and provide an opportunity for these countries to contribute to the global economic agenda.
India’s assumption of the G20 presidency has sent a clear message that it is now a significant player on the global stage. Despite the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine conflict, which have proven difficult for most countries, both developed and developing, India has managed to navigate these obstacles successfully thanks to its strong leadership and wise policies over the past three years.It is impressive to see India taking such proactive steps as the President of the G20 to address the concerns and priorities of the global South. The organisation of the ‘’Voice of the Global South for Human-Centric Development’’ virtual Summit is particularly noteworthy, as it brought together 125 countries to share their perspectives and priorities on a common platform.By focusing on human-centric development, India is also highlighting the importance of inclusive and sustainable development for all.
It is also encouraging to see that the troika comprising of the current, past, and future Presidencies of the G20 will comprise of three major developing and emerging economies, which provides a unique opportunity for India, supported by Indonesia and Brazil, to make a significant contribution to global peace and prosperity. As India looks forward to its Presidency of the G20, its determination and confidence are reassuring, and it is hoped that India’s leadership will pave the way for more cooperation, collaboration, and dialogue among G20 members.

In conclusion, India’s Presidency of the G20 is a significant opportunity for the country to showcase its leadership and make a significant contribution to global peace and development. By focusing on the issues of the global South, leveraging its digital infrastructure, and promoting global peace and stability, India can enhance its position as a leading player on the global stage.
India has a long history of championing the concerns of the Global South and promoting third world solidarity. The Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), which was founded in 1961, played a key role in this regard. The NAM was a grouping of developing countries that sought to promote their interests and safeguard their sovereignty in a world dominated by the Cold War superpowers. India was one of the founding members of the NAM, and played a leadership role in the movement for several decades. India’s leadership of the Global South has continued beyond the NAM era. In recent years, India has been at the forefront of efforts to reform the global governance architecture to make it more representative of the interests of developing countries. For instance, India has been advocating for a greater role for developing countries in the United Nations, and has been pushing for reform of the Security Council to make it more democratic and representative. In its capacity as the present chair of the G20, India possesses a unique opportunity to accentuate the perspectives and apprehensions of the countries comprising the Global South in the global arena.
